Oelo vs Gemstone vs Trimlight: Best Permanent Outdoor Lighting (2026 Comparison)

Published May 15, 2026 by the CleanGutters Lighting Team

Permanent outdoor lighting has exploded in popularity. Instead of climbing ladders every December to hang string lights — and taking them down again in January — homeowners are installing LED systems that stay up year-round, hidden in the roofline, and controllable from a phone app.

Three brands dominate the market: Oelo, Gemstone Lights, and Trimlight. All three offer permanent, app-controlled, color-changing LED roofline lighting. But the engineering, durability, and long-term value differ significantly.

We've researched all three extensively and install Oelo systems across South Jersey, Eastern PA, and Delaware. Here's our honest, feature-by-feature comparison to help you choose the right system for your home.

Durability and Weather Resistance

This is where the differences really matter — especially in the mid-Atlantic, where your roofline lighting has to survive nor'easters, ice storms, salt air, summer heat, and UV exposure 365 days a year.

Oelo: IP68 Rating

Oelo's IP68 rating means the lights are fully submersible — tested to withstand continuous immersion in water. In practical terms, this means ice dams, wind-driven rain, power-washing your fascia, or standing water from clogged flashing won't affect the lights at all. IP68 is the highest weatherproofing rating available for lighting.

Gemstone and Trimlight: IP65 Rating

IP65 means protection against water jets from any direction — rain, sprinklers, and normal hose spray. That's solid protection and adequate for most conditions. However, IP65 is not rated for submersion or prolonged standing water exposure. If ice builds up around the lights or water pools in the track channel during heavy rain, IP65 systems are more vulnerable to moisture intrusion over time.

The difference between IP65 and IP68 might not matter in Year 1. It matters in Year 10.

LED Lifespan and Quality

Oelo LEDs are rated at 100,000 hours. If you ran them 8 hours per day, every day, that's over 34 years of operation. Gemstone and Trimlight LEDs are rated at 50,000 hours — still impressive at ~17 years of daily use, but half the lifespan.

More importantly, Oelo uses higher-binned LED chips, which means more consistent color accuracy and brightness across the entire run. Lower-binned LEDs can show slight color variation from one end of a roofline to the other, which becomes noticeable on solid-color displays like all-white or all-warm-white.

Safety Certifications

Oelo is UL certified — the gold standard in electrical safety certification in the United States. UL certification means the entire system (lights, wiring, controller, mounting) has been tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories for safety compliance.

Gemstone and Trimlight carry ETL listing, which is a legitimate alternative safety certification. Both UL and ETL are accepted by building codes. However, UL certification is more widely recognized by home insurance companies and carries more weight during home inspections and resale.

Mounting and Installation

Oelo

Oelo uses a patented aluminum track system that mounts directly to the fascia board or under the first course of roofing. The LEDs snap into the track, creating a completely hidden installation — from the ground, you see only the light, not the fixture. The aluminum track is structural, UV-resistant, and designed to last the life of the home.

Individual LEDs can be replaced without removing the track, making maintenance straightforward if a single node ever fails.

Gemstone Lights

Gemstone uses a proprietary channel-mount system. It's clean and reasonably hidden, though slightly more visible than Oelo's flush-mount track on certain fascia profiles. The system is well-engineered and installation quality depends heavily on the dealer.

Trimlight

Trimlight uses a track-based channel similar to Gemstone. It mounts cleanly and is designed for low visibility. Trimlight has a larger dealer network, which means installation quality can vary more widely — always verify your local installer's experience and reviews.

App and Smart Home Integration

All three systems offer smartphone apps for color control, pattern selection, and scheduling. Here's how they compare in practice:

Oelo App

Gemstone App

Trimlight Edge App

All three apps work well for basic control. Oelo's calendar automation and community library give it an edge for homeowners who want "set it and forget it" seasonal displays without manual updates.

Price Comparison

For a typical South Jersey home with 150–200 linear feet of roofline:

Brand150 ft Home200 ft Home
Oelo$2,700–$5,250$3,600–$7,000
Gemstone Lights$3,000–$5,700$4,000–$7,600
Trimlight$3,300–$6,000$4,400–$8,000

Oelo typically comes in at the lowest price point of the three premium brands, while offering the highest IP rating, longest LED lifespan, and UL certification. The cost savings come from Oelo's efficient manufacturing (Made in USA in Colorado) and their direct-to-dealer model that cuts out intermediary markup.

Our Recommendation

We install Oelo because, after extensive research and hands-on experience, it's the best-engineered permanent lighting system available. The combination of IP68 waterproofing, 100,000-hour LED lifespan, UL certification, patented aluminum mounting, and Made-in-USA quality — all at a lower price than Gemstone or Trimlight — makes it the clear winner for South Jersey homeowners.

Gemstone and Trimlight are both legitimate products. If you're comparing quotes from all three, you won't make a bad choice. But dollar for dollar, Oelo delivers the most durability and the longest service life.
